On behalf of all of us at 40 West and the Outreach Committee, THANK YOU to all who delivered brown grocery bags and flyers in the neighborhood last week and all who helped to publicize the event, the drivers and pick up helpers, the 40 West office volunteers and Board Members and our Director and volunteers helping to sort and store the food! A Special Thank You is for Kim Flash and David Mountain, co-chairs of the Outreach Committee, and to Charles Flexner for coordinating the event! We are so thankful and grateful that we are so blessed by your giving spirits!
On Thursday, April 2, 40 West held a food distribution in the parking lot near our offices. We were able to give away 291 bags of food to 97 persons! Each person received 21 pounds of food – that’s a total of 2,037 pounds of food! Thanks to all our volunteers who helped pack and give out the food! I know it meant a lot to all those needing food at this difficult time as we are dealing with the effects of the COVID 19 virus.
MLK Day of Service Food Drive on January 20, 2020 to benefit the Food Pantry at 40 West A & R!
We received 4518.3 pounds of food to re-stock our pantry! We well exceeded our goal of 2000 pounds!
In appreciation for the life of service exemplified by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., more and more people have decided to make MLK Day a day ON, rather than a day off, a day dedicated to serving their communities. In this spirit, for our 8th year, the St. Bartholomew’s Outreach Committee sponsored the drive. Over 40 volunteers, neighbors and members of our supporting churches, helped with the Food Drive this year! The Center was bustling, with folks scheduling the routes for the many drivers and pick up volunteers coming and going with bags and boxes of food, preparing boxes to store the food, receiving and organizing the incoming food, checking dates, weighing the food, sorting it into boxes, stacking the full boxes, and enjoying coffee and donuts in fellowship with all for such a worthy cause in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.! We collected donations from our area neighborhoods – Academy Heights, Edmondson Heights, Hunting Ridge, Ten Hills, and Westgate. In addition to St. B’s, three other 40 West supporting churches also collected food for the Drive – St. William of York Catholic Church, St. Agnes Catholic Church and Hunting Ridge Presbyterian Church. And this year, Mt. St. Joseph High School also sponsored a food drive for us!

On Saturday, October 5, 2019, over 300 people enjoyed plentiful crabs and delicious food at our 6th Crab Feast Fundraiser, sponsored by and benefitting the 40 West Assistance and Referral Center Inc. and Hope Harbor. There were 50/50 raffle boards, vendors selling their wares, a very active Wheel of Chance table with sweets and libations, a silent auction and gift card game. The evening was enhanced by the DJ’s lively music and sharing the evening with friends and family!
We are now in the process of planning for our 7th Annual Crab Feast to be held in October 2020 – with catering by Monaghan’s Pub, and crabs provided by Harris Seafood, Live DJ, auction items, games of chance and 50/50 money board games – and all the good times together! So mark your calendars and stay tuned for more information!

Ernest Jones lives with his wife, his son, and his son’s two children. He comes to 40 West regularly to pick up pantry staples like applesauce and beans, along with fresh fruit and meat. He can’t get everything he needs at this food pantry, but it’s a big help. Like many who come to this church basement in west Baltimore, he’s living on a fixed income, but providing for many. “I was just asking these people if they knew of any jobs for my son, you know?
